Running a hospital: What does it take?
Well worth the read and in desperate need of patient input. Thanks to e-Patient Dave for leading me to this. I've read Paul Levy's blog before, but hadn't seen this post.
So, take the time to read it and comment. Folks need to hear what patients think.
Thanks, Robin ... I voted for you. Ain't social media wonderful, being able to spread the word and meet each other. Thanks too for your excellent comment on Paul's blog.
ReplyDeleteAnd what a mind-blowing blog that is. In another comment on that post, I said we as patients should expect that hospitals put patients first, just as Albert Schweitzer would. And son of a gun, Lachlan Forrow responded - the president of the Albert Schweitzer Foundation.
Truly, social media (e.g. blogging and Twitter) are giving ordinary patients like us access to amazing connections that wouldn't have happened otherwise.
Hi, Dave. Thanks for the vote.
ReplyDeleteJust between you and me, I sometimes wonder if "organized healthcare" (which could mean a lot of things) has gotten too big for its britches. When reading the responses on Paul's post, it's about them, not the patient. As I told my daughters pediatrician years ago when he complained about having to see her, "Hey, you don't pay me to be there. I pay you to be there. If you don't want my business, we'll go elsewhere." I actually got an apology and both daughters received excellent "patient service" from him and the others in his practice until they grew up and moved on to other doctors.
I have found out I can't use that attitude/say those words to my doctors anymore. They have enough patients so they don't care if I move on. Or that's the impression with which I'm left. Of course they don't come out and just say that.
I just read what Mr. Forrow wrote. Interesting, indeed.
Dave, is there an organized patient group advocating for change in healthcare? Is there an organized doctor/patient group doing the same? I hear/read a lot about the need for change, but I don't see many folks doing anything.
